Capitan New Mexico, a scenic city!

Capitan New Mexico makes news everywhere.

In 1950 town earned the title "The Birthplace of Smokey Bear." Before that the U.S. Forest Service had promoted fire prevention by using posters with a bear named Smokey. This idea started in 1944 as an idea between the Forest Service and the Advertising Council. Artist Rudolph Wendelin drew Smokey Bear.

The Capitan New Mexico is mostly famous for the Smokey bear. There was a big jungle fire, which was very difficult to extinguish. After the fire settled down, the town people found a bear that was clinging to a tree, his feet and back were badly burnt. They tended the burns immediately then the bear was sent to the Santa Fe zoo. There he was named Smokey.
