One must know that describing Mexican American women is not so easy!

Mexican women are warm and gracious.

There have been great strides, with somewhat limited gain, on attempts to dispel machismo and "hembrismo." Hembrismo is extreme female submission while machismo is extreme male dominance. These ideas have greatly limited the opportunities for women and have limited them to the boundaries of the home. It has not been easy trying to enlighten men to think of women as free agents instead of symbols or sexual objects.

When given the opportunity to state their opinions on legal equality, education for women, the double standard or divorce. The press rarely reported on feminist events, and when it did, it was minimal. Lack of funds to publicize their efforts, often made them seem invisible.

Women wear a dress or skirt and blouse. A classic suit may also be worn. They have a wardrobe of classic lines, classic skirt lengths, and basic classic colors - gray, navy, white, and ivory. Women may shake hands with men and other women. Many times a woman may pat another woman's shoulder or forearm, or kiss on the cheek.
