Durango Mexico has got its own attraction for tourists with a total area of 121,776 sq km.
The state's estimated population in 2000 was 1,445,922. The state is bordered by the states of Chihuahua on the north, Sinaloa on the west, Nayarit and Jalisco on the south, Zacatecas on the southeast, and Coahuila on the east. Durango Mexico is a large, diverse state that is among Mexico's top producers of agricultural, forest, and mineral products. Several important rivers cross the state's rugged topography, including the Nazas, the Tepehuanes, and the Santiago Papasquiaro. The city of Durango, the state's capital and commercial center, is located in the south-central part of the state. The only other major cities are Gómez Palacio and Ciudad Lerdo.
Durango Mexico also has a unique history. The war for independence from Spain ended in the city of Durango in 1821. It was one of the original states at the time of Mexican independence, and played a significant role in the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920). The scene of several important initial uprisings, it was also the birthplace of Francisco "Pancho" Villa, a leading general and revolutionary figure.
