The 'Mexican Cession' territory included all of the present-day states of California, Nevada, Utah, parts of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming.
Mexico surrendered the 'Mexican Cession' to the United States for a sum of USD $15 million.
The 'Mexican Cession' is a historical name for the region of the present day southwestern United States that was ceded to the U.S. by Mexico in 1848 under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo following the Mexican-American War. For the 38 years between 1810, when Mexico declared its independence from Spain, and 1848, the 'Mexican Cession' had formed approximately one-third of the territory of Mexico.
The war grew out of unresolved conflicts between Mexico and Texas. After winning its independence from Mexico in 1836, the Republic of Texas was annexed by the United States in 1845; however, the southern and western borders of Texas remained disputed during the Republic's lifetime. That same year tensions between the two countries over territory were raised followed by war which ended with the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo under which 'Mexican Cession was ceded to the U.S.
The 'Mexican Cession' included parts of the modern-day states of Texas, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, and Wyoming, and the whole of California, Nevada, and Utah. The remainders of what are today the states of Arizona and New Mexico was later ceded under the 1853 Gadsden Purchase.
