Mexican immigrants make up a majority of in the southwestern United States.

Because Texas borders Mexico, many of Mexican citizens have settled in the states. This gave birth to a unique Texan-Mexican culture in the state in the late 19th century, which mixed elements from the Mexican, Texan, and southern United States cultures.

According to estimates based on the census and other government data, about 5.3 million undocumented Mexican immigrants are living in the United States. And over one in every two Mexican immigrants is undocumented. Between 1912 and 1920, large numbers of rural farmers, known as Campesinos, fled to the United States to escape political turmoil in Mexico, and the U.S. Congress was forced to pass new laws in 1924 that severely restricted immigration.

This Mexican American community however, remained poor and alienated from mainstream America. Most of these immigrants have to depend on their own kind to provide them with jobs, like maybe in a Mexican pharmacy. In the mid-1960s the United Farm Workers union, and those of Mexican pharmacy led by César Chávez, began organizing migrant farm workers, eventually winning union contracts for some and helping spur greater protection of migrant workers' rights.

During the 1960s the efforts of Mexican American political activists, labor union organizers, educational reformers, and student leaders gradually coalesced into a broad-based campaign to secure civil rights and economic opportunity for the Mexican immigrants' community. This campaign became known as the Chicano movement. Legal and illegal immigrants continue to cross the border from Mexico into the United States.
