In Mexico soccer is known as futbol. Well known teams include Cruz Azul, Club America and Chivas de Guadalajara. Well known soccer stars include Hugo Sánchez, Luis Hernández, Francisco Palencia, Cuauhtemoc Blanco, Jared Borgetti and Rafael Marquez. Boxing also holds a popular spot in Mexican sports.

The Mexican Grand Prix was a Formula One auto race held at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City. It first appeared as Mexican sports in1962 before being held between 1963-1970 and 1986-1992. The return of F1 in Mexican sports is to be commemorated at a new $70 million circuit that will be designed by Hermann Tilke and built near Cancún.

Other popular sports include jai alai, a type of handball in which the players use wicker baskets strapped to their wrists to catch and throw the ball with great speed, baseball, basketball, tennis, golf, and volleyball. The Mexican form of rodeo is called charreada.

Lucha libre, a Spanish phrase loosely translated into English as "free-style fighting", is a genre of professional wrestling developed in Mexico, and an integral part of Mexican sports. Lucha Libre traces back to the early 1930s when Salvador Lutterroth brought American wrestlers he had seen during his time in Texas to Mexico. A Lucha Libre performer is known as a luchador, and like soccer players, these contenders probably need to make a lot of trips to a Mexican Pharmacy .
